annual St. Charles Middle School Science Fair in Arlington was held
Friday morning, Fedruary 3rd,  in the auditorium, exhibiting the research of the
sixth, seventh and eighth grade classes. On display were 39 research
projects covering the physical sciences of chemistry, physics, and
earth science, as well as the behavioral and social sciences.

I’ve been working as
part of a civic organization and recently noticed some illuminating
behavior. One member of our team gets fairly constant praise for
average work. 





I never thought much about
it, but then as results got worse, the praise increased. It has
gotten to the point where pointless adulation is a significant part
of board meetings.

Changed my relationship with the word. Previously respectable was nose in the air, Viennese middle class, not much use.  
Now respectable is a lot less formal. Able to be respected. That kept me from falling backward and losing total distance.
In golf, I get more distance when I exaggerate the follow-through at the end of my swing. The ball also goes in the direction I want.

I see three levels of integrity.  





Soon after someone learns that
integrity is keeping your promises, they reason that if they don’t
make any promises, they can have perfect integrity. 





Then they discover nobody cares. Some
never go beyond.




The next step is to make and keep
appropriate promises, depending on what you can handle and your 
capability.
